(Cethleann island.)
The town of Enniskillen is situated
mainly on an island at the junction of Upper and Lower Lough Erne The
origins of the town go back to prehistory when this was the main highway
between Ulster and Connaught. Enniskillen Castle was the medieval seat
of the Maguires,
chieftains of Fermanagh, who are said to have maintained a private navy
of 1,500 boats on the Lough.
In 1594 the he town was attacked and
captured by the English led by John Dowdall and George Bingham.
The castle now houses the Regimental
museum of the Inniskilling regiments who fought at Waterloo it also contains
exhibits and an audio visual display's on the region's natural history,
