(Cethle's island.)
This famous castle was once the stronghold
of Gaelic chieftains
the Maguires who are said to have policed the Lough with a private navy
of 1,500 boats. During the Plantation the Castle was taken over and used
as an Army Barracks. The castle has exhibitions on the Maguires and the
natural and social history of Fermanagh. Special exhibitions are held
throughout the year focusing on art and history.
Today the castle houses the Regimental
museum of the Inniskilling regiments who fought at Waterloo. The museum
also has an audio visual program on the region's natural history, archaeology
and folklore.
