Bagnel's Plantation family.

The town of Bagenalstown derived its name from Walter Bagenal who is credited with founding the town in the 18th century. It is situated on the river Barrow and benefited substantially as a result of the canal industry which flourished until 1846 when the railway arrived

Carlow is widely known for the granite once quarried in the area some of which can be seen at the railway bridge on the Goresbridge Road.

Bagenalstown has many fine buildings particurarly the courthouse built by Bagenal the design is based on the Parthenon in Athens, all that remains of Bagnals grand designs for the town.
